Why Your SASE RFP Needs Better Questions

Most SASE RFP templates fail because they ask generic questions that every vendor can answer "yes" to. "Does your platform support DLP?" "Do you offer SD-WAN?" "Is your solution cloud-native?" Every vendor says yes. None of those answers help you differentiate.

The SASECompare RFP generator takes a different approach. Instead of broad capability questions, our template uses 121+ specific, testable requirements drawn from 12 independently researched security topics. These are the same checks we use to evaluate vendors on our comparison pages, where generic "yes" answers don't survive scrutiny.

What makes a good SASE RFP question?

A weak RFP question: "Does your platform inspect encrypted traffic?" Every vendor will say yes. A strong RFP question: "Can your platform perform TLS 1.3 inspection on unmanaged BYOD iOS devices accessing ChatGPT via the native browser, without requiring MDM enrollment?" That question separates vendors in seconds.

Our template is built entirely from questions like the second example. Each requirement targets a specific capability gap that our research has shown varies significantly across vendors. When you send this RFP, vendor responses will actually differ, giving you real signal for your evaluation.

How to use this SASE RFP template

  1. Select topics that match your evaluation priorities. You don't need all 12.
  2. Customize questions within each topic. Remove any that are not relevant to your environment.
  3. Add your metadata (project name, org, deadline) to brand the document.
  4. Download the template as a markdown file, ready to convert to your preferred format.
  5. Send to vendors and compare responses side-by-side using the built-in scoring criteria.

The template includes a standardized scoring system (YES = 1 point, PARTIAL = 0.5, NO = 0, ROADMAP = 0.25) so you can objectively compare vendor responses. Categories can be weighted based on your organizational priorities.

All requirements are sourced from SASECompare's independent research across 8 vendors: Zscaler, Netskope, Palo Alto Networks, Cato Networks, Cisco, Fortinet, Cloudflare, and Check Point. No vendor pays for inclusion or has editorial influence over the questions.
